IT IS a double celebration for uMlalazi Mayor Queen Xulu.
Xulu has just graduated and won an excellence award in a space of two weeks.
Just a few days after Xulu graduated with a diploma in advanced management, she also walked away with a Women Leaders in Government award.
Xulu was up against the likes of Nontombeko Boyce, Hlengiwe Shozi, Princess Phumzile Buthelezi and Sizophila in the category.
The annual Sebenza Women Awards, which are dedicated to rewarding hard-working women in their respective fields, were held at the Durban ICC on Friday, 6 October.
Xulu, who has been in the local government for 23 years, said the crown is fit for her head as he works very hard to make a difference in people’s lives.

"This award belongs to my community. The people of uMlalazi whom I wake up every day and ponder on what next I can do to improve their lives,” she said.
Xulu is the first female to hold the rural municipality mayorship and with her experience, she has made it easy for herself to navigate the challenges faced by the rural communities.
“My gratitude also goes to my supportive staff and family. To all the women out there, young and old, this is for you. Today's accomplishment is evidence that greater heights can be achieved, as long as the pulse is still there, regardless of age, colour or creed. The world is indeed your oyster," said Xulu.
The mayor is also a SALGA chairwoman, and a member of both the IFP NEC and the party's Women's Brigade.
Kini Shandu, founder of the Sebenza Women Awards, said these are influential women in the political sector who have shown exceptional performance.
“They have also displayed astute leadership and strategic foresight in politics to forge ahead in pursuing an inclusive and accountable government,” he said.
