KZN's top female sangomas are nominated in a newly introduced category at the 5th Sebenza Women Awards.
People have questioned organisers about how they were nominated.
Kwenzekile Mngoma Bhengu (Glam Dlozi), Makhosi Mzobe, Anele Biaca Khoza, and Smangele Mhlongo (MakaChicken) are nominated, and voters will decide who is the best.
The sangomas are popular and market their work on social media.
Awards project manager Gugu Madonsela said there were outcries for the category to be introduced.
“When we introduced it, there was a debate about how we would see if the muthi for sangoma one works better than the muthi for sangoma two.
“They were asking how we were going to see who is practising witchcraft better than others or who can attack others with lightning,” she said.
Gugu said the category focused on the business approach of the nominated sangomas.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, many people marketed their business using social media and other digital platforms to run their businesses, and it has been a success.
“On the category, we were looking for traditional healers who run their healing business on digital platforms. It is not about who is better in healing, but about how they turn their patients into their clients,” she said.

Gugu added that they salute the sangomas who took their gift to the next level by including an element of the business to service their far and near clients.
“They understand the use of ever-evolving technology.
“We appreciate them for that,” she said.
The nominees were announced at the beginning of August, and the voting lines will be closed on 15 September.
The date and the venue for the prestigious event will be communicated.
