The panel, composed of the heads of the Chapter 9 institution, the Chief Justice, the acting Public Protector, the Chair of the Human Rights Commission, and the Chari of the Commission for Gender Equality, will interview the candidates in June.
The Office of the Chief Justice issued a media notice in February for nominations of interested persons to fill one (1) vacancy on the Electoral Commission.
The closing date for the submission of nominations was on Wednesday, 10 March, but there was a limited number of suitable candidates which forced the panel to re-advertise.
Current Commissioner Glen Mashinini was appointed to the top post in April 2015 by former president Jacob Zuma for a seven-year term.
His term ended in April 2022 but was reappointed.
The secretariat said the shortlisted candidates will be notified of the exact time and venue for the interviews in due course.
After the interviews are completed, the panel will submit a list of no fewer than eight recommended candidates to the Home Affairs portfolio committee.
Then the committee nominates a person from the list of recommended candidates, and that person is then recommended by a majority resolution of the National Assembly for appointment by the president.
