MUSICIAN DJ Teddy believes the saying that money is the root of all evil.
He shares all his thoughts about it on his new single.
The song, titled Imali Yami, talks about what money makes people do.
The DJ and producer, whose real name is Zipho Sigcau (25), spoke to SunBuzz about the song.
“The message behind Imali Yami is that money can do so much for you, even buy you love. You can travel to anywhere you want. It can make people respect and be afraid of you. This single is basically inspired by real-life occurrences. It comes from being frustrated about not having money, especially if you want to pursue something that requires money. And on the other side, there are people who spend a million rand in less than six months. So, some parts of the song also talk to people who blow money without making good decisions and spending it wisely,” he said.
“And that is why I say money is evil because it has a way to manipulate the world in different ways. So, the single tells people to spend wisely before you regret your decisions.”

The musician said he’s always wanted to change the world through his music.
“I did music for multiple reasons. Firstly, it was because I wanted to spend time with my dad because he was always out on gigs and sessions. He was also a musician. Another thing is that growing up, I saw a lot of issues that we normally see in our country and I wanted to be the voice that changes things. I wanted to talk to the people of South Africa and the world at large to be better people,” he said.
DJ Teddy said 2023 is the year for him to start working towards his future.
“Well my plans are very much bigger than me. I am currently a CEO at a recording label called RootKey Entertainment. The plan is to work with as many creatives as we can in order for us to spread the word and we are aiming to shoot for the stars,” he said.
“The dream is to win a Grammy. I wish to collaborate with every artist that uplifts spiritually, people like Thandiswa Mazwai, Camagwini and Zakes Bantwini,” said the musician.
