BET has gathered all the big guns for their new show.

The drama series called Queendom stars actors such as Sindi Dlathu, Thandeka Dawn King, Hamilton Dlamini, Themba Ndaba, Mduduzi Mabaso and many other actors who are loved by South Africans.

Queendom starts on 22 April at 6,30pm and it follows the story of a future queen, Ntando, played by Linda Mtoba.

The channel launched the event on Tuesday, 17 April at Kings Kraal in Bryanston, north of Jozi where they streamed the first episode.

Co-creator of the show, Sayitsheni Mdakhi, who is also an actor said they worked hard to put the show together because it required a lot of research.

“This concept is unique. We tried to create three worlds that speak to each other. The township world, then we went to Houghton for the glitz and glam, then we created an amazing world in the form of the Drakensberg Mountain."

“We went to Drakensberg, and we did our research there and we created this concept about a queen in making. I mean just imagine in this day and age, what if a girl from Tsakani is chosen as the next heir to take over from Misuzulu, wouldn’t you watch that?” Sayitsheni said.

Linda plays as the lead, Ntando, the future queen. The former The River and Isibaya actress said she's happy to be part of a show that challenges patriarchy.

“Ntando embodies the dreams, hopes and aspirations of women. That women can do it all. You can be a woman and do great things. I really think that Ntando represents a lot of women. She's shifting the narrative, the direction. We’ve always said, 'can you imagine a woman leads'. Now you don’t need to imagine it. BET has made it happen” Linda said.

Thandeka Dawn King plays the mum Queen MaDlomo, a devious queen. She's the mother to Mcebo (Pallance Dladla), the next heir to the throne and she uses him to exercise her power.

“Like any other mother, whether they are royalty or just a mother, a mum of a son always makes sure they are behind their son no matter what.

“Her son does as he pleases, and his mum is always there to bring him on track. Behind him, she needs to be the king. It basically has nothing to do with him. It has everything to do with her. So, with him, she shall be king," she said.
