FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reportedly made a big request for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reportedly made a big request for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is said to have requested a big change regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set to be held in Morocco.

The 2023 edition of the showpiece that was held in the Ivory Coast has received widespread praise following its conclusion on Sunday.

Not only were several on-field records broken, but the competition was also a commercial success, with CAF confirming that it reached record numbers in terms of viewership from across the globe.

With the 35th edition set to be hosted by Morocco in 2025, Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa was handed the hosts' flag after the final on Sunday while on stage during the winners ceremony.

Lekjaa was then reportedly spotted on the sidelines having a chat with the FIFA chief and CAF president Patrice Motsepe, and according to Kooora, it was then that Infantino proposed that the next AFCON should be held either in March 2025 or postponed to January 2026.

A source claimed that Morocco's initial plans to host the event during the months of June and July would prompt FIFA to ask UEFA to delay the start of the European leagues to September that year because the FIFA Club World Cup is also set to take place during the mid-year period.

It is further claimed that Lekjaa did not give a definite answer to Infantino, but rather insisted that the months of June and July offer ideal weather conditions for the African tournament as opposed to having it early in the year.

It is further reported that Infantino wants a decision to be made soon in order to amend football schedules where necessary and discuss a way forward with other international stakeholders.
