A ZOLA Budd taxi driver fled the scene, after crashing into oncoming traffic on Sunday, 7 April.

More than 11 people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the crash involving the taxi, a Nissan Impendulo and a Toyota Corolla on Sunday, 7 April.

It happened at the corner of Andrew Mapheto Drive and Corner Transformation Road near Phomolong in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni, not far from Birch Acres Mall.

Fortunately, no life was lost. It's been reported that the minibus taxi crashed into the Impendulo and Corolla after failing to brake.

Among the injured is the Zola Budd driver, who fled before cops arrived at the scene. He's believed to have been coming from Edenvale.

Ekurhuleni Metro police spokeswoman Marie Mashishi said: “A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened at Rabie Ridge Police Station. No one has been arrested so far and the matter has been handed over to SAPS.”

According to Mashishi, the taxi was impounded at Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department's offices in Tembisa.

One of the witnesses said: “This driver must be found and held accountable for the accident. Why drive a taxi with no brakes? Even the owner of the taxi must answer to why he failed to fix the brakes. Almost every day there's an accident here, and a taxi would be involved."
