THE untimely death of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs on Wednesday night, 3 April after a botched hijacking has left Mzansi reeling in shock. 

The incident happened at a petrol station in Joburg.

The 24-year-old Chiefs centre back was waiting for a petrol attendant when he was approached by unknown gunmen, who pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle.

According to Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, Luke was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI when he was approached by the gunmen.

But he is not the first celebrity to lose his life during the commission of a crime.

Here is a list of celebrities whose lives were taken by thugs:

Rapper Sandile Mkhize (February 2022)

Sandile, popularly known as DJ Citi Lyts, was shot and killed in the morning of 14 February 2022 in Dube, Soweto. The 32-year-old was shot more than seven times during a hijacking.

A murder case was opened.

Actor Dumi Masilela (August 2017)

The Rhythm City actor was shot dead in an attempted hijacking in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni. Dumi was shot in the upper body after perpetrators opened fire when they tried to flee the scene. He was 29.

Five men were convicted of his murder and were sentenced to life in 2021.

Musician Lucky Dube (October 2007)

The late reggae musician was killed in an attempted car hijacking in Rosettenville, Joburg. He was with his son and daughter, who escaped unharmed. Although Lucky was shot twice, he tried to drive off, but ended up hitting a tree. He was 43.

In 2009, three men were sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years each for attempted robbery.

Musician Gito Baloi (April 2004)

The bass guitarist and vocalist was shot and killed during a hijacking on his way home from a concert. The Mozambique-born artist was shot in the neck in downtown Joburg. He was 39.

Some celebrities were fortunate to survive:

Musician Sipho Makhabane (February 2024)

The gospel singer survived a hijacking and robbery in Booysens, Joburg. He was kidnapped by men he thought were cops. They later cleaned out his bank account.

Actor Rapulana Seiphemo (February 2016)

The actor was involved a horrific accident when he crashed his vehicle with two hijackers in a shocking incident. Three people, including one of the alleged hijackers, died in the car crash on the N14 near Diepsloot, north of Jozi.

Musician Vusi Nosa (September 2017)

The singer was kidnapped in a hijacking outside his Melville home, Joburg. He was stripped naked, beaten, and asked to sing about his life during a joyride. The singer was grateful to be alive.

Musician Nasty C (September 2017)

The rapper was left traumatised after two armed men stormed his house with a gun and knife and made off with belongings, including a Rolex watch.

Actor Jamie Barlett (January 2017)

The late veteran actor, who was forced into the boot of his car and taken on a joyride, was attacked by three armed men at a robot in Joburg and kidnapped for hours.
