CITY of Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has handed over the search of a woman who was allegedly swept away by a flash flood while driving in Sunninghill on Friday, 12 January to the police.
This after EMS embarked on a search for the woman for nine days with no success.
It was reported that the woman was driving through Sunninghill on Friday, 12 January when she was allegedly swept away by floods on Rivonia Road.
Supported by the police, ZASRA, GPG, National Rescue South Africa and Gauteng traffic police, the EMS Aquatic Team embarked on an extensive search and rescue operation that lasted for nine days during which the woman's body was not recovered.
EMS media liaison officer, Xolile Khumalo said the body of a drowned person is expected to surface after at least five days in water.
“If it doesn't surface, it is suspected that the body is immersed in sand or debris. The worst-case scenario could be that the body floated to a nearby river that is outside the Johannesburg jurisdiction,” she said.

Khumalo said EMS has asked neighbouring municipalities to be on the lookout for the body as they have now handed the case over to the police to continue with the investigation.
“Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family during this time. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank all entities who supported the operation and the community of Sandton who showed us love by providing refreshments and food. Phambili with the spirit of Ubuntu! We thank you,” said Khumalo.
EMS urged residents to be extra careful when driving during this rainy period and to stay clear of flooded roads and low-lying areas.
They also pleaded with communities that have built homes around riverbanks to ensure their children are safe and that they do not play in storm water drainages.
