THE Joburg EMS Aquatic team is still searching for a woman who was allegedly swept away by a flash flood on Friday, 12 January, in Sunninghill.

The woman was allegedly swept by the floods while driving past a bridge at Witkoppen Road.

The car the victim was driving was recovered a few kilometres from where the initial incident occurred.

As the car was found floating in the water, it was beyond recognition, and one could never tell what kind of a vehicle it was.

According to eyewitnesses at the taxi rank, the woman was driving behind another car towards the bridge, which was filled with water since it was raining at that time.

The man at the taxi rank told Daily Sun that they saw the woman driving behind another car.

“As she was following a car that was in front of her, that car took a U-turn; however, we were shocked to see her proceeding; as we were still shocked, we saw the waters overpowering the car, and that’s how the car rolled over the bridge into the river,” they said.

The man further explained that whenever it rains, taxi drivers are very cautious not to drive on that bridge because whenever it rains, it gets filled to the maximum, and the water starts flowing towards the road.

“We just hope that they can install longer and stronger steel poles in the bridge so that should an incident like that occur again, the steel will prevent the car from rolling over to the river,” said a taxi driver.

Joburg EMS Media Liaison Officer, Xolile Khumalo said that the search of the woman resumed on Sunday, 14 January in Denver, Joburg.

“EMS continues to urge the residents of Joburg to be extra careful when driving during this rainy period. Stay clear of flooded roads and low lying areas. We also plead with the community that has built their homes around the riverbanks to please ensure that the children are safe and they do not play in storm water drainages,” she added.
