POLICE in Gauteng are appealing for help in tracing a suspect who escaped from custody on Wednesday, 11 October.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, police at Lyttleton Police Station in Tshwane have launched a manhunt for an escaped suspect named Kingsley Leeto Chele.

He said Chele was a Facebook scammer who targeted women by posing as a doctor or pharmacist and scamming them out of their hard-earned money. He called himself Dr Kingsley Chele or Dr KJ Ncube.

"He pretended to be looking for investors while defrauding them of thousands of rands for projects that did not exist. He was arrested by police on 2 October 2023 in two cases of fraud registered at Sunnyside Police Station and Klipgat Police Station in June 2023. When he appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court, his bail was refused and he was remanded in custody until his next appearance on 17 October 2023," he said.

Masondo said the investigating officer in the case called in the Asset Forfeiture Unit to assist in the seizure of the accused's property believed to have been accumulated as proceeds of crime, including a 2023 VW Golf GTI.

However, on Wednesday, 11 October Chele managed to escape custody when police catalogued his household items at his home. He has been on the run ever since.

"Police have registered a case of escape from police custody at Honeydew Police Station," Masondo said.

Masondo is appealing to anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Captain MS Motolla, on 082 715 9583 or CrimeStop number 08600 10111.
