ONE suspect has been arrested after more than 30 human trafficking victims were rescued in Boksburg on Sunday night, 3 November. They were found stashed in one room at a house in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.
According to KZN police spokesman Robert Netshiunda said, they were led to the house in Boksburg after following up on a kidnapping case of a foreign national.
“Detectives from KwaZulu-Natal were tracing a suspect in connection with a case where a foreign national was kidnapped in Springfield Park last week.
“Investigations led the police to a house in Benoni and working with national police specialised units. The house was tactically penetrated, and thirty-three men victims were found cramped in the house, and one suspect was arrested,” he said.
This rescue operation happened just a day after 42 buses carrying passengers from Zimbabwe were turned away at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on Saturday night, 2 December.
Among those passengers were 443 unaccompanied children under the age of eight, according to Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, who suspected that the children were abducted.
All the children who were rescued had Zimbabwean passports and were handed over to the Zimbabwean authorities for processing.
Meanwhile, the ages of the victims who were rescued in Boksburg have not yet been confirmed. The suspect who was arrested will appear in court soon.
