A MPUMALANGA cop who allegedly stabbed his wife with a whiskey bottle has abandoned his bail.

Constable Lucky Maduna (34) appeared briefly in the Barberton Magistrates Court on Friday, 20 October.

Maduna is facing charges of murder and attempted murder.

His arrest comes after he allegedly assaulted his wife, Nonkululeko Mtsweni (28) while attending a party at a local liquor outlet earlier this month.

The accused allegedly hit Mtsweni with a beer bottle after she refused to leave with him, and upon it breaking, he fetched an empty whiskey bottle and repeatedly stabbed the victim in her face and head until she succumbed to her injuries.

Maduna allegedly stabbed Mtsweni's friend, who was trying to intervene. The friend suffered injuries and is currently receiving medical care in a hospital.

His attorney, Katlego Mashiloane, said they were ready to proceed with bail.

Mashiloane said the consultations he had with the accused indicated otherwise.

"He confirmed this morning that he will abandon bail at this stage. As to why he is abandoning bail, we can't disclose at this stage," he said.

Meanwhile, Nonkululeko's father, Themba Mtsweni, told Daily Sun that the family is relieved that he had decided to abandon bail.

Themba said they lived in fear as the accused allegedly threatened to come after his kids.

"We're happy that he has abandoned bail. This man is very brutal. We feel much safer because of the decision he has taken. What he did is very painful. My children are not coping, and everything happened towards the exams. This has affected them," he said.

The matter has been postponed to 15 November for further investigations.
