A STILLBORN baby was retrieved from a pit toilet in Ga-Matshana Penge in Limpopo on Tuesday, 25 July.

This after the highly pregnant mentally challenged 28-year-old mother noticed that the baby had slipped into a pit toilet while she was using it. She then hurried to a hospital for help.

Police spokesman, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the Search and Rescue Team as well as Emergency Services Personnel found the stillborn and it was retrieved.

"The woman is still in the hospital for medical attention and the police have opened a case of concealment of birth," said Ledwaba.

In another incident, the police in Mahwelereng received a complaint about a drowning in Mogalakwena River. He said a 39-year-old mentally challenged man from Sekgakgapeng allegedly threw himself in the river and drowned.

"It is alleged that he left home earlier on Thursday, 27 July at about 13:00. He was recognised by a neighbour, who then called his family, but he had already drowned," he said.

He added that an inquest case was opened by Mahwelereng police.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe asked families to take care of mentally challenged family members. She also urged families to get professional help for them.
