THE past three years have been very painful for Anna Apie and her family.

The 49-year-old from Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, told Daily Sun that she had been struggling since 2019 when her older sister Margaret (59) was found buried in a shallow grave in Alexandra, Joburg, after allegedly being murdered by her boyfriend.

Anna said Margaret went missing after going to visit her boyfriend in January 2019.

“She was supposed to go for the weekend but when it went by, she was nowhere to be seen. I tried to call her but the phone went to voicemail,” she said.

“I thought she decided to stay a bit longer but after a week, I got worried and went to look for her. Her boyfriend claimed she came back to Tembisa.”

Anna said they reported her missing to the police and went looking for her every weekend.

“In March, we begged him to tell us what happened to her.”

Anna claimed the boyfriend told the family he killed Margaret and buried her in the bushes.

“We called the police and when we eventually dug my sister up, we couldn’t recognise her as the body was decomposed.”

Anna said the boyfriend was arrested but given free bail, and was still walking free – three years later.

“We don’t know what’s going on with the case. The person handling it doesn’t talk to us,” she said.

Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspect was arrested and charged with murder but later released on bail.

“His next court appearance is on Tuesday, 6 September, at the Joburg Central Magistrates Court.”
