FAMILIES are struggling to find their loved ones’ graves.

This is because tombstones and anything that is metal are being stolen by thugs at Sofasonke Cemetery in Klipgat, North West.

According to residents, it’s not only nyaope addicts stealing as other residents have also joined in to make some extra money.

They said all the zinc and iron had been stolen from the cemetery toilets and security office.

Community leader Jack Sekgojane (43) said the vandalism has been going on for five years as security guards were removed from the cemetery.

“We cannot continue blaming nyaope addicts for the theft. We should be bold enough to blame those who buy from them.

“There are people who have roofed and built fences with stolen zinc and iron bars. My question is, are they sleeping peacefully?” he asked.

Jack said the thieves are selling the metal at local scrap yards and operators of welding businesses are involved.

He has blamed the Madibeng Municipality for negligence.

He said thugs also rob people who visit the cemetery.

Madibeng Municipality spokesman Tumelo Tshabalala said: “Many other municipal facilities like community halls and sports grounds are vandalised. The matter of security at all municipal facilities is, however, receiving attention.”
