WHILE most families were enjoying Christmas.

Some families in Ladysmith, KZN are in mourning.

That's because the devastating floods in KZN have once again claimed five lives, while six people are still missing and several cars have been washed away.

These flash floods hit Ladysmith on Christmas Eve, 24 December.

It's alleged that around midnight on Christmas Eve, 24 December, a riverbank along Bellspruit collapsed, causing severe flooding around 11pm.

Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesman Siboniso Mngadi said: "It is with regret that we confirm another deadly flooding disaster that has resulted in the tragic loss of five lives after several vehicles were washed away in Ladysmith on Christmas Eve."

He said he was deeply saddened that at a time when most families come together to celebrate Christmas Day, some families have tragically lost their loved ones.

"We extend our deepest condolences to all families and friends affected by this devastating incident. Our emergency response teams and partners will continue their tireless efforts to find and recover the missing persons," he said.

He also said that immediate disaster relief was provided to all those affected.

"The South African Weather Service has warned that more than normal rainfall is expected this summer. We therefore caution all residents to remain vigilant during the summer season and to heed the weather warnings issued from time to time.

"Our disaster management team will remain on high alert to respond to any eventuality," he said.
