WHILE many South Africans feel the government is not doing enough to honour their basic human rights, some Good Samaritans are out there working on closing those gaps.

The South African Red Cross Society has been hard at work in several kasi’s across the country to bring much needed relief to the poor.

The residents of Dube in Soweto have been on the receiving end of the organisation's good deeds.

The elderly were given groceries and toiletries, while other residents received warm cooked meals daily.

Red Cross national health officer and youth secretariat Koketso Thema said their main purpose is to give dignity to the disadvantaged in the communities. He said they do this by trying to assist in providing some of their basic needs.

He said they assist in donating food, health care, clothing, blankets and hygiene packs, among other things.

“As part of our mandate of restoring dignity and ensuring that people’s lives a preserved, beyond that what we do is a calling. We believe that humanitarian work and serving the needs of the people on the ground is truly a calling,” he said.

Thema said as Mzansi will be celebrating and commemorating Human Rights Day, he feels there are some instances in communities where human rights have been violated.

“The basic needs of the people on the ground are not met. We saw this in Hammanskraal with the cholera situation which is a violation to the community. We were active in that, and it shows that we need to continue advocating for human rights for people on the ground,” he said.

He said they assist people depending on the donations they get from people and the government.

“We call on those who are able to assist to get in touch with our organisation so that we can continue helping as many people as we can,” he said.

Community leader Ntethelelo Jali said such gesture from the Red Cross warm his heart because in their area many people are suffering, and some go to bed on empty stomachs.

“Some are scared to say that they're starving but as leaders, we're forced to identify such household and assist where we can,” he said.
