ONE of his dreams has always been to help those who in need help in his community.

And since his music has done well, he has decided to celebrate with the people of Cape Town by giving back.

Gqom DJ Simphiwe Sihawu, popularly known as Mr Thela, is giving back to his community in Cape Town on Monday, 5 February.

The Iparty hitmaker partnered with Hollywood Foundation and will donating R30 000 worth of essential school supplies to Nal’uXolo Primary School in Samora Machel.

The 23-year-old said the Hollywood Foundation unveiled the return of its highly successful Back to School campaign.

“With a remarkable R8 million pledge, the campaign aims to support parents and empower learners from diverse communities across South Africa, at the beginning of the new school year by providing them with essential school supplies,” he said.

He told Daily Sun it feels good to know that the parents and kids will appreciate what he will be doing for them.

“Giving back means a lot to me. It’s important to give back to people who support you and your music. There are people coming from kasi who support me but are struggling, so I want to help them,” he said.

Mr Thela said helping people in his kasi is also his way of motivating them.

“A few people come out of kasi and do great. This is to show them that your past doesn’t determine your future. You can grow up in poverty, but you don’t know how far you can make it in the future,” he said.

He said that a lot of good has come from the challenging industry.

“We have kept on working and even the work is starting to get recognised. We are growing day by day and people are getting to know me by day,” he said.

Mr Thela said that his chart-topping album, Tronics Land Series 2, has done well and has over four million streams across digital platforms in less than a month.

“The album is doing wonders for me, and people are receiving it in a way I never imagined it. I will be going overseas with this album, and that's also my biggest highlight,” he said.
