A DEFENCELESS three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 12-year-old boy.

The incident took place in Tshififi Village in Limpopo on Tuesday, 12 December at approximately 3pm.

It is alleged that what began as a playful afternoon for the victim and her friends at the suspect's house, turned into a nightmare.

Limpopo police spokesman Hlulani Mashaba stated that when the toddler returned home, her mother suspected foul play.

"She then took her to the local medical center, and that's when it was confirmed that the victim was raped," said Mashaba.

Cops were called and a case of rape was opened.

"The Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit launched an investigation which revealed that the victim was raped by the 12-year-old boy. The police investigation continues," said Mashaba.

Recognising the delicate situation involving a minor, a Probation Officer was brought in for intervention.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned the incident.

"Children need to be educated about the consequences of their actions.

"There is an increase in the sexualisation of children, and they fall victim to abuse perpetrated by adults and children themselves.

Hadebe said parents should pay more attention to the children they are raising.

"They should always be protective of their future and what they are being exposed to," said Hadebe.
