LAST month, a 67-year-old man drowned under the Stoffberg Avenue bridge in Brakpan.
The man was trying to cross the water-filled subway when his car was overpowered by water, and he drowned.
According to Ekurhuleni emergency services' spokesman William Ntladi, an adult male was declared dead after drowning in a flooded subway bridge while attempting to cross over after adverse weather conditions experienced in the area at the time.
Residents of Germiston fear the same thing will happen at President Street Bridge.
Residents complain the subway is not maintained well by Ekurhuleni Municipality.
"If it can rain seriously, motorists can drown there, " said resident Mdumiseni Dube.
Dube said the bridge is low, and a water dam is up because of the blocked storm drain pipes.
"We hardly see municipal workers coming here to unblock it. They are also waiting for the disaster to strike, and that's when the municipality will do something," he said.

On Wednesday, 20 March, there was some debris with water under the President Street bridge.
A resident, Rachel Du Toit, said the problem with Ekurhuleni Municipality is that service delivery had stalled in most parts.
"We cannot guarantee when they will come to clear the stormwater drains. Germiston is so dirty, and you cannot say it is the headquarters of the Ekurhuleni municipality.
"If the City cannot clean its house, how do you expect the rest of the municipality to be okay?
"We just pray that it doesn't rain heavily. Otherwise, someone is going to drown," Rachel said.
Zweli Dlamini, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Municipality, said there's nothing they can do to avoid debris.
He said the municipality has programmes to clear the stormwater drains in subway bridges to prevent disasters.
