A DRIVER of a sedan car drowned in Brakpan in Ekurhuleni on Monday, 26 February.
According to Ekurhuleni emergency services' spokesman William Ntladi, an adult male was declared dead after drowning in a flooded subway bridge while attempting to cross over after adverse weather conditions experienced in Brakpan.
"It is alleged that the driver attempted to cross and subsequently, the vehicle was overpowered by water and the driver drowned.
"Currently, rescue teams from both Brakpan and Springs fire stations inclusive of the SAPS water-wing unit are in attendance," said Ntladi
He said the driver has been found and the vehicle is still stuck in between the bridge pillars.

"The driver was alone in the car and the lifeless body of the unknown person will be taken by SAPS forensic officials to the government mortuary," he said.
A concerned motorist said the driver of the car was going under the bridge when the incident happened.

"His car disappeared under the bridge, and I believe this was caused by the drainage system.
"The drainage system couldn't contain the pressure of the water and the car vanished under the bridge," he said
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Grant Giblin confirmed the incident and said an inquest case has been opened and the matter is under investigation.
