THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is accusing the Nkomazi Local Municipality of corruption and neglecting the Nkomazi community.

EFF National Treasurer Omphile Maotwe led the march together with provincial leader Collen Sedibe on Thursday, 11 April.

It allegedly took the management of the rural municipality an hour to attend to the marchers.

Maotwe told Daily Sun that the people of Nkomazi have been complaining about services for a long time.

She said there is corruption allegedly happening in the municipality and contractors allegedly don't finish the work given to them.

"There are roads that are not finished, water reticulation projects that were given a lot of money, but they are leaking, and people are not getting water. A security tender was awarded, and it was lied about increasing personnel, but instead, it has been halved.

"The EFF is in council, there is a lot of corruption that was happening prior to the EFF being in council, what are is the municipality doing about the challenges in communities," she said.

She added that as this year marked 30 years since the country has been in democracy, there is nothing that the 30 years has brought to the people of Nkomazi.

Maotwe said the march was not an election campaign but an effort to demonstrate the frustrations of the community.

"This is not really about the elections; they are in office and were elected to take care of the people, and they are not taking care of the people. We saw it fit that we march to the offices to send a message that the people are not happy," she said.

"There is no service delivery in Nkomazi, and we can't stay and say because it's elections we are going to be told that we are electioneering, the challenges of our people are challenges of every day when we choose to march, it is our choice, not a choice of anybody the mayor can't tell us that we can't march. These are the cries of our people; they have been in office, and they keep on frustrating our people; enough is enough!" Maotwe said.

Nkomazi municipality spokesman Cyril Repinga refuted claims of corruption and said there was never a contract awarded by the municipality who has not done their work and that all contractors have done their work as per the contract.

"There have been heavy rains which destroyed almost everything, our road infrastructure has been washed away and there have been delays in the construction of the road but we are continuing to ensure that proper services are rendered to the entire community," he said.

The memorandum was received by councillor Lindiwe Vuma, who promised to hand it to the relevant authorities.
