RESIDENTS of Magangeni Village in Limpopo are still in shock after a dog was found eating the legs of a newborn baby boy who was dumped at Lemana Dam.

The incident happened on Thursday morning, 23 November.

It's alleged that a witness (29) was walking along a gravel road in Magangeni along a bridge when he noticed a black dog eating the flesh of a dead baby.

The witness told Daily Sun that the neck of the infant was strangled with something that looked like pantyhose.

"We were all in shock as this is the first time we witnessed such an incident after two years since two people drowned at the dam. We are with the mother who dumped her child, and it looks like she gave birth at home because the umbilical cord was still intact," he said.

Limpopo social development department spokesman Joshua Kwapa urged mums who cannot care for their kids to reach out to social workers.

"If they're struggling, they should contact social workers who can guide them towards solutions best suited for their children's needs and safety," said Kwapa.

Vhembe police spokesman Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the incident.

"When the police arrived at the scene, they found the tiny body of an infant and noticed that both legs were missing up to the middle of the thighs, and the left arm was completely missing. The neck of the infant was strangled with something that looked like pantyhose," said Dathi.

He said that the infant was a boy, as his genitals were still intact.

"The body was removed from the scene by a Forensic Pathologist from Elim Hospital government mortuary for a postmortem," said Dathi.

The suspect is still unknown, but the police are investigating.

Dathi urged anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the mother to contact investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Mmberegeni Jonathan Muthavhine on 082 319 9629.
