THE City of Ekurhuleni is shocked at the mafia-style killing of one of its employees.
The late Simnikiwe Mapini died in a hail of bullets near the Rand Airport while travelling with a colleague on Friday, 8 December.
According to Ekurhuleni municipal spokesman Zweli Dlamini, Simnikiwe and his colleague stopped at a red robot, and suddenly, two armed men got out of another vehicle and started opening fire at the deceased before speeding off.
Dlamini said it's unclear what the motive of the shooting was.
Simnikiwe, who worked as an adjudicator in the finance department, was declared dead on the scene.
He said his colleague was not injured in the incident.

“This is a sad incident and one that has shocked the entire municipality. He was a hard-working young man, and our condolences go to the family, friends, and colleagues during this trying time,” said metro.
“Making the situation worse is that Mr Mapini is stolen from his family a few days before Christmas which is a time of family reunion, in most instances.”
A memorial service for Simnikiwe will be held at Germiston City Hall on Wednesday, 13 December.
Police spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed the incident.
She said cops are investigating a case of murder, and no one has been arrested.
