MPUMALANGA police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala has been suspended.

He was suspended for misconduct. The notice was issued on Monday, 8 January.

His suspension comes two weeks after he conducted interviews with a news channel, Newzroom Afrika on 28 December 2023. In a letter seen by Daily Sun, Mohlala allegedly contravened the South African Police Service discipline regulations.

During the interview, Mohlala made statements or comments that the provincial commissioner didn't do anything wrong by receiving the gifts while he was aware that an internal process has instituted by the national commissioner to determine whether the conduct of the provincial commissioner is in contravention with the relevant prescription or not.

The letter indicated that Mohlala undermined the authority of the national commissioner to institute processes in terms of section 6 and 9 of the South African Police Service Act of 1995.

Last year, national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola suspended provincial police boss, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela after she allegedly requested donations worth R2,1 million from different police stations in a form of money and also buying gifts including appliances, couches, and a TV stand.
