Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, who is also the founder and awards organiser, said the purpose of this event is to remember the sons and daughters of the soil who were trendsetters, ordinary and prominent citizens, unsung heroes and heroines who left indelible footprints.
"Siyabakhumbula means we remember them. These awards are awarded posthumously. Our motto for the awards is, 'People forget what they should remember and remember what they should forget'," said Mzwakhe.
The inaugural Siyabakhumbula Awards were held in 2010 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.
"A total of 92 South Africans who were sportspersons, journalists, musicians, actors and comedians have been honoured and celebrated. The intended impact that was envisioned was accomplished by identifying, honouring, celebrating and offering monetary incentives to their families," said Mzwakhe.
He said the healing effect that has been experienced over the years is beyond human comprehension.
"The awards are based on six pillars, namely ommemoration, heritage, culture, arts, sports and history," said Mzwakhe.
The awards will take place on Wednesday, 11 October at the Sun Bet Arena Time Square in Tshwane.
