Thobeka 'Sena' Mkhwanazi, who was recently eliminated from Idols SA, said the singing competition gave her the push she needed.

SHE has always dreamt of performing at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, USA but being part of the final season of Idols SA was a dream come true for her.

Although Thobeka Senamile Mkhwanazi, who is popularly known as Sena was recently eliminated from the singing competition, said season 19 gave her the push she needed.

"Fear of the unknown won't help anyone," she said.

Talking about being on the Idols stage, Sena said it was difficult not seeing her supporters in the audience.

“I am not from Joburg and obviously my family will have a bit of a hard time coming to the shows. They were here last week and I was so happy seeing the people that I love,” she said.

How her talent was discovered

The 28-year-old from Durban, KZN, who made it to the top seven of the singing competition, said her musical talent was uncovered by accident.

“I was tidying up my room as a child while singing, thinking I was home alone. Someone heard me and encouraged me to nurture my talent. Since then, I have sung in school choirs and at neighbourhood events, taking every opportunity to sing,” she said.

She said she stayed true to herself when she joined the show.

“I know the kind of person I am and the best thing that I could do to myself was to improve in each performance, but sometimes it didn’t work out the way I wished,” she said.

Prayer kept her going

Sena said she tried to push herself.

“Don’t be afraid of a challenge, that was my biggest strategy,” she said.

She said sharing the house with other contestants was interesting.

“It was really nice and fun. Apart from us being competitors, we’ve also grown to have good relationships with one another. We respect each other and get to understand different personalities,” Sena said.

She told Daily Sun that prayer kept her going.

“In a place like this you need to find your anchor, go back and just be like, 'I had a not so good week' and just pray and work hard,” she said.
