AWARD-WINNING musician Mnqobi Yazo is back with a new project after four years.

His last album, Impi which was released in 2020 had songs such as Lubanzi and Isiginci and was certified platinum and he promised that this album will do as well.

The album is titled Ubhoko and was released on Friday, 26 January.

Mnqobi (30) from Maphumulo in KZN spoke to Daily Sun about the project.

“This is not the Mnqobi Yazo that people are used to. This album is totally different from the previous projects I've done. I touched on different topics and had a different sound on my last album, Impi. As life went on, I discovered new things, and I wrote this album based on them.

“The change was inspired by growth and accepting that I'm a different Mnqobi Yazo. Even the music that I do needs to grow with me and show that I’m on a different level. The challenges I had back the years are different from the ones I am facing now,” he said.

The singer said he spent the past years working on this album and perfecting it.

“I’m a person who doesn’t like to rush. When I work on something, I like to take time. I don’t want to rush things and release music just because I see that other people are dropping. I’ll drop music at my time and that’s what I did. I always want to make sure that I produce music that I would also enjoy.

"I can’t be giving people music just for the sake of it. I work with energies,” Mnqobi said.

The album features Yallunder, Njilour, Ndabaz, Igcokama Elisha, and Olefied Khetha.

“One of the special features in the album is Ndabaz. That man is very talented. I met him through social media. I saw a video of him playing an accordion on TikTok and I knew I had to find him. I downloaded the and posted it asking people to help me find him. I eventually found him. He plays two accordions at the same time, one with his mouth and the other with his hands.

“I also enjoyed working with the people I featured,” he said.

Mnqobi said his fans all around South Africa should expect to see him this year.

“I’m working on quite a number of things this year. I have one-man shows lined up in different provinces, Durban, Gauteng and Makhanda in Eastern Cape those are the places we have confirmed so far,” the singer said.
