THE story of Kalawa Jazmee is one of the most told stories in the entertainment industry. Now, the record label founders have decided to finally tell the story their own way.
They officially launched their docu-series called The Kalawa Jazmee Story on Thursday night, 10 August, in Rosebank, Joburg.
In attendance were celebs such as Mmabatho Montsho, DJ Fresh, Smash Afrika, Tats Nkonzo and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who rocked a bucket hat in honour of the dress code, Your Inner Pantsula.
The series will air on Mzansi Magic, and the first episode starts with the label owners telling the story of how they met. It's made up of Oskido, Mahoota, Spikiri, Mjokes and Dope. Oskido said he was glad to tell his story himself.
"We are grateful for this show, and I believe it's all God's plan. We don't get to tell our stories as Africans, and for me, I think this goes to show when God brought us into this world. He wanted us to leave a legacy, and I think this is our legacy.

"And to my kids, finally they know daddy," he said.
Mahoota dedicated the show to their late friends.
"This goes to the fallen soldiers of Kalawa Jazmee. Rest in peace. We love you guys, and thank you for blessing us with your amazing talents," he said.
The creator, Vincent Moloi, said: "The story of Kalawa Jazmee is the story of empowerment, both creatively and economically. Just a fun fact: the IFPI, which is the company that tracks music sales worldwide, registered that South Africa is the fastest-growing music market in the world, and part of that is related to the foundations that were made by the Kalawa Jazmee team."
Lesufi said he thinks the label's story must be taught in classrooms.
"I want to congratulate the guys and congratulate the TV channels that took on this show. The history of Kalawa Jazmee must be taught in classrooms and textbooks. That's the history that made us survive harsh times and difficult moments. We are who we are because at least when the apartheid cops were beating us in the morning, we would dance to this music at night," he said.
The Kalawa Jazmee story premieres Sunday, 13 August, on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) at 5pm.
