WHEN they started dancing, people from their kasi thought they were a joke.

But Blaq Spider Pantsula are now the pride of Soweto, and they're one of the best dance groups in Mzansi.

The group consists of five members - Dimpho Mile (22), Katleho Shabe (22), Thato Lapisi (19), Theo Gaerekwe (21) and Motlalepula Radebe (21).

They started dancing together in 2020.

Dimpho said their purpose is to take pantsula culture to the next level.

"We have adopted pantsula dance as a career. This genre is our culture in Mzansi," he said.

Dimpho said they are making a living from dancing away dust with their All-Stars.

He said pantsula dance is helping them stay away from crime, drugs and alcohol.

"We are a family and we all possess unique dancing skills," he added.

Katleho said he feels blessed to be part of the group.

"We are from the same kasi and have known each other since childhood," he said.

He said dance helps them to stay discipline and humble.

The group members were part of the Tjovitjo drama series from 2016 to 2018.

The said besides dancing, they also sing and are event organisers.

They have performed in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State and KZN.

The Blaq Spider Pantsula members said they want to spread their wings internationally.

The group has won numerous competitions and scooped prizes along the way.

In 2022, they won first prize in the Red Square dance competition in Maubane, Limpopo.

The group also won Stambo Stomp competition at Auckland Park in March 2019 and walked away with R20 000.

They also won R20 000 in Jive Nine9 competition held in Kagiso, Mogale City in 2018.

The Blaq Spider Pantsula group also hosts the annual Pantsula Cotton Fiesta in Soweto every first Saturday in November.
