DJ TSHEGU'S journey has been one for the books.
The DJ, whose real name is Tshegofatso Petlhu, started out when she was five years old and is now one of the leading amapiano musicians in Mzansi.
She is currently celebrating 17 years as a DJ and was taught how to spin the decks by her father, Modisotsile "DJ Shala" Phetlhu, who was a DJ for Bloemfontein Celtics.
Now at 22 years old, her hit song, Tiya Mfana featuring Focalistic is currently one of the biggest songs on social media.
“My love of music started with my dad. He was a DJ and I had to go to gigs with him, and that’s how I learnt to DJ. He was a DJ for Bloemfontein Celtics, but only for the home games. I just watched him play, and I eventually started playing. That’s when my family realised that I loved music and wanted to do it,” she said.
The DJ also got into production and worked with some South African musicians, and that’s how she produced Tiya Mfana.
“I never thought I would get into production while growing up, but I studied production after high school and focused solely on that. Through that, I got an opportunity to be in studio with a few famous people. I would learn more about music through observation. I learnt how music is made and fell in love with it.

“When I was in studio, working on Tiya Mfana, I knew it wouldn’t be just anyone who would feature on it. I thought of the names of people who would be perfect to be on the song and Focalistic was the one. And that was because I told my story through the production and when I approached him, the lyrics he sent complimented the song,” she said.
DJ Tshegu said she couldn’t believe how big the song had become.
“It’s unbelievable how the song is doing. I never thought it would be this big. I’m very patient. I thought it would take long to get out there. So, it’s unexpected, but I’m grateful and appreciate everyone who supported me,” she said.
