BOITUMELO Stokvel cares for children in need.

Boitumelo was started in 1993 by 15 people.

Maggie Makgakwe (33), a member from Mamelodi West in Tshwane, said when they started they paid R100 a month. Maggie said the aim of the stokvel was to rescue orphaned children from disadvantaged families.

“We were tired of seeing children suffer from the mistakes their parents made.”

She said that as mothers, there were a lot of things they could do to better the lives of orphans.

“I wouldn’t want my child to sleep on the streets, which is why I help.”

She said that even though they can’t rescue all the orphaned kids, they were doing the best they could. Some members have even adopted children.

Maggie said they were hoping to build an orphanage. “We have managed to extend our houses with the money we contribute.

“All we want is to care for the children and most importantly provide a safe and secure home for them.

“When we have a meeting, a member provides equipment and catering. We only expect the host to buy the meat.”

Maggie said they also gave back to the community by providing feeding schemes to disabled children.
