PHILANI Mlatshwayo is a man with a big appetite.
He was representing University of Joburg’s Auckland Park campus when he won the Varsity Eat Off competition hosted by Sandwich Baron recently in Joburg.
Speaking to SunFood, Philani said he could not believe his luck when he won the competition.
“I did not eat breakfast on the day of the competition in order to prepare myself,” he said.
Philani, from SnakePark in Soweto, walks away with a free sub sandwich every week for a year.
Although he said he was expecting a some cash, he is grateful to have won this prize.
He was among the three finalists that also included Nkuleleko Diji, who represented Wits University, and Maui Pardise from AFDA. They had to eat the most footlongs in 20 minutes. Philane ate three chicken mayo footlongs!
The competition was just one of 20 Sandwich Baron hosted to celebrate its 20th birthday. The campaign was aimed at rewarding the various communities of customers for their loyalty.
Sandwich Baron was founded by Sally J’Arlette-Joy two decades ago, and has grown to 51 stores over North West, Gauteng, KZN, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.
J’Arlette-Joy said she always considered sandwiches to be a staple meal.
“This is why I am so confident that Sandwich Baron will continue to grow from strength to strength and will be successful for many years to come,” she said.
The franchise offers a menu of over two hundred items including sandwiches, French breads, footlongs, baked potatoes, corporate platters and since June last year, its popular high-protein Banting breakfast or lunchboxes.
