DESPERATE unemployed graduates decked out in their academic gowns were this week seen protesting on the streets of the Eastern Cape.
Research by the Institute of Race Relations in 2016 estimates the number of unemployed South Africans with tertiary education to be 405 000.
Reasons for not being able to get a job after graduating include the poor quality of some institutions, a lack of work experience, or qualifications in areas for which there is little demand.
According to figures released by Statistics SA in November last year, a shocking 27,1% of the population of working age is without a job - the highest number in 13 years.
