THE EXCITEMENT continues at the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games as fans flock to the grounds in their numbers to witness great football in Alexandra.
The 16th edition of the MAP Games, as they have become known, has brought joy and created jobs for the local community. More than 15 000 fans witnessed the Last 32 round at the Rotary grounds this week.
Attention now turns to the eagerly awaited Last 16 round scheduled for Saturday at the same venue. Teams will attempt to wrestle the trophy away from last year’s winners, Sun City Classic.
Phiri, the former SuperSport United midfielder, is excited that the competition has become a breeding ground for new talent.
He said: “The competition has grown in stature and that’s why we refer to it as SA’s soccer World Cup in Alex. We have huge attendance numbers at all our games, which is exciting. People enjoy the skills and trickery because they have come to miss that in the PSL.
“The competition is a time of social cohesion for people. Those who sell food and beverages also benefit.
“It’s not only about football but also unites people. People from different cultures come together to enjoy one another’s company.”
Phiri has pleaded with sponsors to support the competition.
“It’s not easy to get sponsors, but I am grateful that Br Umso construction has provided a helping hand.
“With more support we can help uplift the standard of football in Alex and improve the lives of our people.”
