DESIREE Ellis has shrugged off criticism over her team selections, defending the decision to make regular changes for the Cosafa Women's Championship fixtures.
Eyebrows were raised when the interim Banyana coach made as many as eight changes to the team that thumped Namibia 3-1, against Botswana in their last Group C match on Sunday.
She'd also rang changes to the team which hammered Lesotho 3-1 in the opening fixture.
However, even though the alteration looked drastic, Ellis feels she was vindicated by the 1-1 draw against the Zebras of Botswana.
As it is, South Africa are through to the semifinals and will battle it out with Zambia for a place in the final on Thursday.
For Ellis, the idea is to afford everyone an opportunity to play in the regional tournament, given the tight fixture schedule of three matches in four days.
"Initially the idea wasn't really about giving everybody a chance, but it worked out that way as we want to keep players fresh," Ellis explained.
This plan has gone against the school of thought that such changes could affect the prospects of success for Banyana, who are chasing their first Cosafa title in a decade.
"People will vilify us for the changes but we are looking at the bigger picture which is also to expand our pool," said Ellis.
Ellis has been brave to hand debuts to novices such as Reginah Mogolola, Nkoikoi Mabina and Nwabisa Kolisi.
"There was no way the same group would have played and won a third game in four days and go hammer and tongs for the semifinal. We've discussed this with the physical trainer as well.
"This group has shown its mental strength. We haven't played as many games prior, yet we've done well so far.
"With all due respect, we were not going not to lose to Botswana. Unfortunately not all new players raised their hands in that match. They are disappointed with the 1-all draw and they have to take a hard look at themselves because clearly they didn't come to party against Botswana."
Banyana took a day off on Monday and will return to training on Tuesday
