THE Confederation of African Football’s newly elected president, Ahmad Ahmad, will bring new changes to football in the continent.

So says South African Football Association (Safa) president, Danny Jordaan, who was also elected to the Caf Executive Committee on Thursday.

Issa Hayatou was ousted after 29 years in charge and the new sheriff, Ahmad, who hails from Madagascar, is already mooting changes that will benefit the game in Africa.

Jordaan said all the competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), will be reviewed.

Jordaan said: “We will review all the competitions, including the number of teams that qualify for the Afcon. The 16 teams that make up Afcon are not enough.

“There will be an overall evaluation of all the competitions and new changes will be introduced. There will be many changes that people can look forward to.”

Jordaan hailed Ahmad’s election from the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) as the breakthrough that African football needed.

Jordaan added that winds of change are blowing throughout Africa and that the people have spoken.

Safa played a key role in helping Ahmad to end the 29-year reign by Hayatou of Cameroon.

“The process was started in Sun City and many other people were encouraged by the call for change. Cosafa and Safa played a major role in driving the call for change.

“People had to decide if they wanted 33 years of the same thing or if they wanted change,” Jordaan added.

Ghana, Nigeria, Mzansi, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, are some of the countries that were the driving force behind the changes.

Jordaan received 35 votes and it was a case of third time lucky because he had been battling to become an executive member for years.

Jordaan has promised change in African football in terms of decision making. He said the old Caf had a preference of small West African countries.

Cosafa now has three representatives in the new elected Caf Committee.

Jordaan added that Safa will announce the new Bafana Bafana coach this week. He said Safa have found their man and will be introduced to the public soon.

“The coach will be unveiled this week and after that the search for the new Banyana Banyana coach will commence,” Jordaan said.
Desiree Ellis is Banyana’s interim coach.
