THERE’S no business as usual in most places in KZN due to the bad weather.
Some schools, shopping malls and even rail transport have issued warning letters to parents and customers advising them to stay at home, if possible, until the heavy weather clears.
On Wednesday, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa warned train commuters that their trains would be disrupted for the next few days.
Spokesman Zama Nomnganga said this was due to the heavy rain currently hitting urban parts of the province.
“Soil and other kind of rubbish has washed down to the railway lines, which makes it difficult for trains to operate,” said Nomnganga.
He said areas like KwaMashu and Umlazi were worst affected.
“We have organised buses in some of the areas to help transport our passengers.
“We wish to advise our passengers to buy single route tickets at the moment until we are sure that the weather conditions have gone back to normal.”
Cleaning teams have been sent out to all the affected areas.
Roseland Primary School in Newlands East, north of Durban is one of the schools affected.
On Tuesday, the school principal sent out letters to teachers advising them to tell kids to stay at home until the weather clears.
Principal Brenda Davids said some of their teachers were unable to report for duty due to the weather, which affected their homes and travelling routes.
“It was highly unsafe for the kids to travel to school as most come from KwaMashu, Newlands and Siyanda, which are areas that are badly affected,” she said.
