THE eThekwini Municipality has promised to attend to the disruption in rubbish collection in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Residents of the kasi have started complaining, saying they cannot bear the bad smell any longer.
They claimed rubbish was last collected two weeks ago and they weren’t told why it was not being collected.
The affected sections are B, C, D and R.
The rubbish collectors are allegedly on strike over a salary increase.
Resident Joyce Zikhali (42) from C section said the road next to her house was filthy and smelly.
“It’s smelly and flies are everywhere. It’s summer time and this is torture for us. We want the municipality to sort out their issues with the rubbish collectors for our health’s sake,” said Joyce.
Sicelo Dlamini (38) from D section said he had to keep his windows closed all the time to avoid the terrible smell.
“The municipality should come up with alternative ways of collecting waste during the strike,” said Sicelo.
Tozi Mthethwa, a spokeswoman for eThekwini Municipality, said they had sent workers to urgently attend to the situation.
“The team is working hard to resolve this situation and will soon reach all affected areas. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
