A YOUNG woman could not believe it when she was given the chance to be a cop for a day.
Nontle Ndabeni (20) from Mdantsane, East London, dreams of becoming a cop.
On Thursday, Cambridge Police Station gave this pupil at Unathi High School a taste of what it’s like to be part of the police force.
Earlier, pupils at the school had been asked to write an essay about the careers they wanted to follow after school. Nontle chose to write about a career in the police force.
Cambridge cops went to the school and invited her to spend time at the police station.
Captain Mluleki Mbi said: “We wanted to give a lucky pupil from a disadvantaged school a chance to see how we work. Nontle’s principal recommended that we take her as she dreams of becoming a policewoman.
“We showed her how to attend to complaints at our community service centre. She also learned about detective work, the duties of the station commander, administration and the supply chain.”
Nontle told Daily Sun: “It was unbelievable – I was wearing a police uniform! I did not expect this as I only heard from the principal on Thursday morning that the police would fetch me. I wish I could wear the police uniform for good and not go back to school again.”
Nontle said she has been inspired by dedicated police officers who work hard for the safety of their country. Many officers have been attacked and killed, but she said she does not feel threatened.
“When I hear that another cop has been killed somewhere I am shocked, but I do not stop wanting to be a cop.”
Nontle is in grade 11. She said she hopes to get her driver’s licence soon so she can apply to become a cop after obtaining her matric.
