ACCORDING to his family, Nhlanhla Mhlongo (40) knew someone was plotting a hit on him.
The Empumelelweni Primary School principal was gunned down on Wednesday afternoon.
Nhlanhla, who was also a taxi owner operating under the Ndwedwe District Taxi Association, was allegedly ambushed and killed by two gunmen at Ngonyameni, south of Durban.
His brother, Mzomuhle Mhlongo (38), said Nhlanhla told the family in July that someone from a different association was threatening to have him killed.
“On the night before he was shot, he received phone calls from people who insisted on meeting him immediately,” said Mzomuhle.
“He refused because he never wanted to be out of the house at night.
“His killers must have decided to ambush him on his way back from work.”
Mzomuhle said his brother had bought a Toyota Quantum engine from the person who was threatening him.
“Later it was discovered that the engine had been taken from a car stolen in December,” said his brother. Cops questioned Nhlanhla and he sent them to the person who had sold it to him. That is when the threats started.
“People who knew my brother kept warning him to watch his back,” said Mzomuhle.
He said Nhlanhla was supposed to testify at Ntuzuma Magistrates Court.
Ndwedwe District Taxi Association spokesman Mzikayise Mhlongo (56) said:
“Nhlanhla alerted us to the death threats.”
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “A case of murder was opened but no arrests have been made.”
