PARENTS of pupils at Velabahleke High School in Umlazi, KZN are accusing the department of education of empty promises.
This was after four classroom doors were stolen from the school in March.
The department of education promised to replace them before the end of May. This gave parents hope that their children would not be exposed to the freezing weather. But the doors have not yet been replaced.
A parent said she is always worried when her daughter goes to school.
“This winter is very cold. My door is always shut to prevent the freezing wind from coming into the house. But knowing that my daughter sits in the cold every day at school hurts me. We don’t know when the doors will be replaced,” said the parent.
Another parent said they tried to get an update from the principal on when the doors would be replaced, but were told not to blame the department.
SGB chairman Mandla Mgobhozi confirmed the doors have not been replaced. He said the principal recently told him the department was dealing with the matter.
“No parent would be happy to see their child learning in the cold weather. We are hoping the doors will be replaced soon,” said Mgobhozi.
KZN education spokesman Scelo Khuzwayo said the department is dealing with the matter.
“We need to follow procedures for the repairs at schools and it’s a long process. But the company that is going to replace the doors has been appointed.
“We apologise for the delay, but we promise the doors will be replaced before the end of winter.”
