HE broke the law, got arrested and was eventually sentenced!
But Thomas Marubini has escaped after serving two years of a seven-year sentence at Leeuwkop Prison, north of Joburg.
Now police have launched a manhunt for the 23-year-old robber from Alexandra, east of Joburg.
Ofentse Morwane, the Gauteng correctional services spokesman, said: “The department has launched a manhunt with other law enforcement agencies to recapture the offender.”
Morwane said Marubini was part of a team working at the prison’s piggery project.
“An internal investigation has been launched to determine how the escape occurred,” said Morwane.
“The department views this as a serious breach of its security measures and will continue to assess and reassess its
security strategies and plans to prevent such incidents.”
- Meanwhile, prisoners escaped from a police truck while being escorted to court on Monday morning.
The awaiting-trial prisoners were being transported from Joburg Prison to the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto at about 8am.
Two suspects allegedly jumped out of the moving truck at Ndaba Drive and fled.
Morgan Mduduzi (28), also known as Bugs Ndlovu, and Thulani Tshabalala (27) allegedly cut the burglar bars of the truck and jumped out.
Mduduzi was arrested for armed robbery while Tshabalala was a murder suspect.
Police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed the incident.
“The suspects are on the run and a search for them is continuing,” he said.
He urged anyone with information to contact their nearest police station.
