NCUMISA Mjindi said she’s lucky to be alive after being shot five times by cops.
She said she plans to sue Police Minister Fikile Mbalula over what happened to her on New Year’s Eve.
The 29-year-old from KwaBhaca, Eastern Cape said she and her sister were on their way to Margate in KZN when they gave her friend a lift to town.
She said her friend, Andile Mayisela went to meet someone, who is apparently a policeman in Bizana, while she waited in the car.
“Andile was on his way back to the car when cops came and started shooting. I was shot in the left breast, right thigh, stomach and left arm,” she said.
Andile said the police arrested him and took him to his home in Qumbu.
“They beat me and vandalised my house. I was told I’d been linked to a robbery in Bizana. I was not charged and they let me go the following day,” he said.
Mount Frere police spokeswoman Captain Edith Mjoko said the police task team was alerted to a suspicious car parked near a garage.
“It’s alleged the suspects fired at the police, leading to a shoot-out that injured a woman. No arrests were made,” she said.
Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini said there was a shoot-out between cops and armed robbers.
