“I’M alive and dead at the same time!”
This is what Sifiso Ngidi recently told Daily Sun while he was talking about the misery Home Affairs had put him through.
The 29-year-old from Denver Hostel in Joburg said his problems started when he was fired in 2013 and went to apply for money from the unemployment fund.
“I was told my money could not be processed because I was dead,” he said.
Sifiso said for the past four years he had been trying to fix the problem, but with no success.
“Every time I go to Home Affairs, officials fail to help me.
“They tell me to get documents, but when I bring them nothing happens,” he said.
Sifiso said officials told him that according to their system he had died in 2006.
“My life is a mess. I cannot even apply for insurance because I am a living ghost,” he said.
He needs the problem to be solved as soon as possible because he fears it could end up affecting his children as well: “I won’t be able to get IDs for my children as I am officially dead,” he said.
Home Affairs spokesman Thabo Mokgola said the department would investigate the matter.
