THE water supply to Gugulethu has had to be shut down for emergency repairs to a burst pipe, the City of Cape Town said today.

The shutdown would enable the Water and Sanitation Department to fix the pipe in Elijah Loza Street.

Water tankers would be moving through the area if anybody needed extra water, and residents were urged to store water for domestic consumption in clean, sealed containers, department spokesperson Farouk Robertson said.

According to the 2011 census, around 98 000 people live in Gugulethu.

About 58% of the estimated 29 000 households had access to piped water. But with around 71% earning around R3 200 or less, the purchase of emergency water was difficult. Robertson said they were working as quickly as possible and had all the equipment they needed already in stock.

They were hoping that the outage would only be for a few hours, also allowing time for the department to build up pressure in the pipes again once the repair was complete.
