FRUSTRATED mkhulus, gogos and even young
people took to the streets complaining about ongoing murders, particularly of old people.
This follows two violent incidents that happened recently in Sebokeng in the Vaal, south of Joburg.
Many residents sang and chanted as they marched with placards from Sebokeng zone 6 to Evaton Police Station on Wednesday.
Resident Vusi Morris told Daily Sun they decided to march to hand over a memorandum as the police were failing to protect them.
“Recently a woman was found dead and naked next to the bridge between zone 3 and zone 6.
“The second incident was when a 64-year-old woman was robbed and killed by thugs while she was on her way to take a train to work,” he said.
According to Vusi, people are attacked from 4am every morning near the station as they go to work.
The memorandum was handed over to Sonnyboy Mmatli, a representative of the Gauteng community safety MEC, at Evaton Police Station.
Mmatli promised the
petition would go to the office of MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane as well as Vaal Sedibeng cluster commander, and
Major-General Zodwa Molefe.
Mmatli further said the MEC will respond within 14 days.
“We will be going back to the leadership of the residents of zone 6 in Sebokeng to give feedback and address the issues at hand.”
