THE WhatsApp message states that the Mangosuthu University of Technology is offering a one-year teaching course – for free!
But the university in Umlazi, south of Durban, has warned that it is a big hoax.
University spokesman Bheki Hlophe told Daily Sun yesterday the warning was issued on Monday after the campus was flooded by people wanting to find out more about the grade R and creche teaching course.
The message circulating on WhatsApp even encourages people without matric to register for the course.
The message reads: “EMangosuthu kuyabhaliswa ukufunda mahhala i-course ya 1 year ye teaching ukufundisa uGrade R nase Creche. Nabanganawo uMatric bayakwazi ukubhalisa bese bephatha their highest passed reports. . .”
Translated into English, it says: “At Mangosuthu you can register to study for free for a one-year grade R and creche teaching course. Even those who do not have matric can register by bringing their highest passed reports.”
Hlophe said the university did not know the origin of the message. He said all those who inquired about the course said the message was circulating on WhatsApp.
“We wish to warn the public that we do not offer such a course and that they need to know that all our courses for 2017 are now full, which means we will not be accepting any more students.”
He said he does not know when the message was created, and the university found out about it only on Monday.
Hlophe urged residents to be vigilant.
He said those who decided to come straight to the university to inquire about it did the right thing. He said the university’s website at www.mut.ac.za had the correct information on all the courses offered.
