A MAN who went around posing as a police officer has been arrested.
The man (34) was found in possession of a full police uniform and had a framed picture of himself in it.
Police received a tip-off from a member of the public about a man masquerading as a cop in Winnie Mandela’s zone 5 in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
Police spokesman Constable Zandile Mgijima said crime prevention members went to a given address on Monday night.
“They knocked on the door of one of the outside rooms.
“The suspect told the police that he was a reservist at Edenvale Police Station,” said Mgijima.
While talking to the man, the police officers noticed the uniform hanging on a wall. They asked for his appointment certificate, but he failed to produce it.
Mgijima said officers asked for permission to search the house and found more police uniforms, name tags, CVs and different ID copies.
“The suspect said the CVs belonged to people he had promised jobs as police officers. He had already scammed each of R2 500.”
He said unemployment drove him to his actions. The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court soon.
